Domestic Airlines
Australia’s domestic airlines provide a fast, comfortable and reliable service with modern domestic terminals in all major cities. Competition amongst carriers has meant that great fares are available.
Australian carriers have a long flying history and handle the bulk of domestic travel. They have substantial fleets of aircraft operating on domestic routes. Travel can be by economy (coach) or business class.
Regional airlines fly within state borders and travel to specific tourist locations, resorts and smaller regional centres.
Virgin blue flies mostly on the eastern side of Australia connecting Sydney with Melbourne, Cairns, the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and the gold coast. It also flies to Adelaide, Perth, Broome and Darwin.>
Jetstar operates out of Melbourne Avalon Airport. The airline flies to 14 destinations within Australia including Adelaide, Cairns, the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Perth and the Sunshine Coast.
Skywest flies in Western Australia (Broome, Perth), the Northern Territory (Darwin), and to Bali.
Regional Express is the only airline the that flies out of Burnie/Wynyard, Tasmania.
Tiger Airways Singapores budget airline soon to be offering very low doemestic airfares.
There are also bargain fares from Qantas - regular red e-deals - that the airline is quick to put in a newsletter and send out.
If a trip to neighbouring New Zealand is on the itinerary, Freedom Air connects Melbourne and Sydney, the Gold Coast and Brisbane with Dunedin and Palmerston North in New Zealand.
Domestic Flights Within Australia
If you have an e-ticket or paper ticket, and are travelling domestically within Australia please bring one of the following forms of identification for booking confirmation:
- Photo ID such as a driver's license or passport or social security card; or
- Your Flight booking reference (printed on Your e-ticket itinerary receipt); or
- Your Frequent Flyer membership card, Qantas Club membership card; or
- Credit card used for this ticket purchase.
Flights within Australia departing from an International Terminal
If you are travelling domestically and departing from an international terminal, and are 18 years of age or over, you will need to produce photographic identification as below that includes your full name. Your boarding pass will have a special 'D' (Domestic) sticker. You will need to sign your name in the space provided and may also be required to record details of your photographic identification.
You must retain your boarding pass as you will need to present it at immigration and customs clearance points at the end of your journey. This is required to comply with the Migration regulations administered by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA).
Photographic Identification
The following are the only acceptable forms of photographic identification all of which must be valid at the time of travel
- National passport; or
- A motor vehicle driver's licence issued under a law of the Commonwealth of Australia, or of an Australian State or Territory; or
- A document that identifies you issued by:
- the Commonwealth of Australia, or
- an Australian State or Territory, or
- by an authority of the Commonwealth of Australia, or an Australian State or Territory; or
- An aviation security identification card issued by the operator of the aircraft or the operator of an airport in Australia
